断食道場にて８ at the clinic for a fast 8

いつものように、朝食堂へ行くと、外人っぽい人が白いジュースを飲んでいる。
近づいていくと、
「ハイ、私は、インド人です。神戸に住み着いて３１年。中近東、アメリカ、ヨーロッパなどへ日本の布地を輸出している貿易商です。ベストの白い色を出す技術は、日本にしかありません。アラブ首長国連邦のドバイなどよく行きますね。バブルがはじけたけどね。まあ、２,３ヶ月に１回は、どこかに行っています。」
「どうしてここへ？」
「酒を断つためです。それと、メタボね。ここへ来るのは、これで３回目。１度は、横浜にある断食道場に行ったことがあるけど、いい加減で、全然ダメだったね。
ここは、厳しいね。初めは、エステやマッサージやいろいろなサービスがあるのかと思ったんだけど、何もない。外にも自由に出られない。でも、ドクターの診察が毎日あって、いいねえ。」
「マハトマガンジーも断食をやりましたよね。」
「彼は、インドのお父さんだから、人生そのものが断食みたいなもんです。国民へのメッセージですね。偉大な人です。」
「宗教は、何ですか。」
「私は、ヒンドゥー教だったんだけど、やめて、今は仏教を学んでいます。８歳の頃からヒンドゥー教にたいしては、大きな疑問を持つようになりました。あれは、階級の一番高いクラスの人が作った制度です。」

彼の話に興味は尽きなかったけど、長時間食堂に滞在してはいけないルールーで注意を受けた。

when I went to the dining room in the morning as usual, a gentleman who looked like a foreigner was drinking a glass of whitish juice. he told me about his business.

"yes, I'm an Indian. I've lived in Kobe for 31 years. I'm a trader exporting Japanese cloth to the Middle East, America, Europe. the best white cloth is only made in Japan. I often trip to Dubai recently. although the bubble economy burst, I go to abroad once in two or three months."

"what brought you to here?" I asked.

"to abstain from alcohol. and obesity. this is my third visits here. once I went to a clinic for a fast in Yokohama. but the clinic in Yokohama was not so good for me. this clinic is hard. first I thought I could get massage or something. but there's no such kind of services. but Dr. Sasada sees me everyday. it's really good."

"Gandhi also observed a fast." I said.

"he is the Father of India. his life itself was a kind of a fast. his fast was the message to the people of India. he is truly great man."

I really enjoyed talking to him, but the clinic prohibited us staying at the dining for a long time.
I wish I could have talked to him a little bit longer.
